The Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa to bring financial education to consumers during Money Smart Week
Johannesburg: With the theme of Build your future, be smart about money, Money Smart Week South Africa 2022 (MSWSA 2022), from 29 August to 4 September, will be taking place at a time when South Africans are going through tough times financially, with tough economic conditions as a result of the rising cost of living brought about by rising interest rates and continually rising fuel and food prices, among other factors.
The Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa (FPI) is a proud participant in, and supporter of, the MSWSA 2022 campaign and FPIMyMoney123™, an FPI initiative focussed on delivering content and information aimed at assisting and improving South Africans’ financial wellbeing, will be collaborating with the ASISA Foundation and African Bank in support of this initiative.
MSWSA is a national financial education awareness campaign aimed at motivating and empowering South Africans to become more educated about their finances, learn about money matters, livelihoods and entrepreneurship. It is based on Money Smart Week (MSW) that was first launched in Chicago, US, in 2002. MSWSA was established by the National Consumer Financial Education Committee (NCFEC) – an entity comprising a variety of stakeholders in the financial education sector established to secure active involvement, collaboration and coordination of various stakeholders in consumer financial education.
The NCFEC considers financial literacy initiatives necessary in South Africa given the high rate of unemployment and low rates of household savings. While MSWSA has adopted MSW’s theme of Build your future, be smart about money for the 2022 instalment of the event, a number of relevant sub-themes to South Africa have been added to ensure that the initiative resonates with South African consumers.
A number of financial education campaigns will be run across South Africa throughout the duration of MSWSA 2022, and FPIMyMoney123™ will be playing its part to bring financial education to consumers. Part of the overall learnings of the campaign will include learning how to obtain informed financial advice from qualified professionals.
This is an important initiative for society as everyone is affected by finances. The FPI’s goal is to encourage everyone to take control of their finances and safeguard theirs and their family’s future. One financially literate person in a home can influence an entire generation.
